Digitex Futures is in the holiday spirit. This is the season of giving, after all, so we decided to donate to a charitable organization Code to Inspire.
At this time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in the commercialization of the holidays. All the things you have to buy to ensure the perfect day, happy family, presents under the tree, and plenty of food and drink on the table.
But, beyond all the material goods it’s worth pausing for a moment and taking the time to remember what this season is all about. Yeah, we’d be lying if we told you we won’t be checking the token price at least every other minute! But we wanted to do something special this year that will make a lasting difference in the lives of others, as well.
That’s why the team at Digitex decided to donate 10 ethereum to Code to Inspire, the first coding school for women in Afghanistan. We thought long and hard about where we could put our donation to the best use and find an organization that would align well with our values, company, and product.
Adam and the team didn’t just want to find a charity that gives hand-outs or one-off aid in the community. We wanted to work with a grassroots organization that pushes the boundaries and plants seeds of hope in those who believed a positive future was impossible.
That’s why we decided to go with Code to Inspire, run by a courageous female founder who was an Afghan refugee for many years and is now back in her homeland busy building “Afghanistan 2.0.”
Empowering Afghan Women for the New World
Code to Inspire is the first organization of its kind in a country that still bears that hallmarks of war. In a land ravaged by social injustice, women are often at a disadvantage because of their gender, social standing, or economic situation.
Code to Inspire is truly that–an inspiration–and works toward teaching women the skills they need to carve out their own careers, prepare their country for the future and to lift themselves out of poverty. By learning essential programming skills for the jobs of the future, they can truly compete in a global tech market.
Not so very long ago, Afghanistan was still under Taliban rule. When they seized the city of Kabul, loudspeakers cranked out a chilling warning that women of Afghanistan were no longer able to leave their houses.
Repressed, treated as second-class citizens, silenced and terrified, much of that legacy still lingers on despite the fact that women are steadily regaining their voices.
Code to Inspire serves as a role model for Afghan women of all ages. It shows them that they can overcome barriers with a little faith and dedication, and proves to them that anything is possible if they put their minds to it. They have so much more to give than simply cleaning their houses. Code to Inspire founder Fereshteh Forough said:
I believe great things can start with empty hands. Knowledge is power and technology is the tool for this empowerment.
Code to Inspire Main Donors
Another major sight that caught our eye when we came across this charity is that they have worked alongside the ConsenSys team. As you know, at Digitex, we’re huge Ethereum fans and have deep respect for the work that Lubin and the ConsenSys team is doing building out the Ethereum blockchain.
Other major names on the advisory board and donor list including Google, BitFury, GitHub, and Overstock.com. These are all forward-thinking companies that see the need for using technology to create social change.
With our donation of 10 ETH, Digitex can pay for the schooling contribution and rent for these bold women for three months. And inspire them to carry on pushing for change long into the future.
It’s Not Only About Making Money
It pays to remember as we’re willing the token price to go up and bemoaning the bear market that this amazing new technology isn’t only about the money we can make. According to a survey by WeTrust, some 77 percent of US crypto holders were interested in making charitable donations–and 79 percent would rather donate than buy a CryptoKitty.
The ICO phenomenon, global crowdfunding, and cryptocurrency have the power to drive true social change and transform people’s lives through financial inclusion. We’re living in exciting times in which technology will be the great equalizer.
Financial inclusion will allow for society to bank the unbanked and give them a chance to create their own financial futures and manage their own wealth. At Digitex, we believe there has never been a more exciting time to live in. Let’s break the mold and push the boundaries together.
