New York Blockchain Week – What’s Happening and What’s Coming Up

This week is one of the biggest in the crypto calendar, with New York Blockchain Week now in full swing! At Digitex, we’re eagerly following all the news and action coming out of the Big Apple. Here, we round up some of the key highlights from the NY Blockchain Week event calendar.

Ethereal Summit

2019 marks the third year of the Ethereal Summit, which kicks off the NY Blockchain Week on 10th and 11th May. The event is staged by ConsenSys so, naturally, the focus is on all things Ethereum. As Ethereum is the platform of choice for our zero-fee futures exchange, the discussions at the Ethereal Summit are of particular interest to us.

A key highlight from day one was the announcement that the Ethereum Foundation will invest $30 million in the Ethereum ecosystem development over the next 12 months. The announcement came from Aya Miyaguchi, executive director of the Ethereum Foundation. This is a greater sum than the $27 million awarded the previous year.

As you know, we have unwavering confidence in the longevity of Ethereum. However, investments of this scale provide assurance to the wider crypto community that the platform is sustainable. This is crucial in the face of an increasingly competitive environment.

This challenge was echoed in the day one debate over how Ethereum can maintain its edge as the leading smart contract platform. Ryan Selkis, CEO of Messari, argued that the way to achieve this is to focus on the growing movement around decentralized finance. Others took a broader approach, advocating Ethereum’s role in bringing about a decentralized web.

On day two, ConsenSys CEO Joseph Lubin positioned himself on the side of the latter in his closing keynote speech for the event. Lubin painted a vivid picture of his vision for the future, wherein the next three decades, all assets had become tokenized and the web completely decentralized. In the shorter term, he also predicted that Donald Trump would win a second term as President. Make of that what you will.

Consensus 2019

The flagship event of NY Blockchain Week is Consensus, taking place from 13th to 15th May. Consensus is staged by Coindesk, one of the most prominent publications in the crypto sector.

The agenda is far-reaching, covering banking, tokenization, enterprise adoption, legal and regulatory considerations, and even specific focus sessions on particular geographies as far-reaching as Korea and Venezuela.

The speaker list includes big names from the blockchain and cryptosphere such as Brian Armstrong of Coinbase, Da Hongfei, co-founder of NEO, Justin Sun, CEO of Tron, and Trevor Koverko of Polymath. Other speakers include senior members from the digital arms of Deloitte, Fidelity Investments, and the World Economic Forum.

Womin’s Lounge

Among all these movers and shakers is our very own CMO Lidia Yadlos. Digitex’s Chief Marketing Officer will be taking her place on the speaker panel at a session in the Womin’s Lounge, called “Cryptocurrency Mania - How Does It Affect the Price?”

The session is on Wednesday 15th May at 9:10 am (Eastern time) at the New York Hilton Midtown. Lidia will be joined by fellow speaker and cryptocurrency trader Lindsay Joo, with Era Qian of Galaxy Digital moderating the session.

The Womin’s Lounge is a collaboration between Coindesk and, the blockchain-based freelancer marketplace for women.

The collaboration aims to bring more diversity to the Consensus event by:

“Providing female founders with the skills necessary to bridge the funding gap while also helping investors generate better returns by investing in women.”

A report published in December 2018 showed that women account for less than 15 percent of team members in blockchain startups and less than eight percent at the executive or advisory level. Therefore, events like the Womin’s Lounge are critical for promoting diversity in the space.

We’re proud that Digitex has a strong female presence among its workforce and that Lidia is stepping up to help champion the cause of diversity in the blockchain arena.

Although the Womin’s Lounge has a strong emphasis on female inclusion, it’s open to everyone regardless of gender. So, if you’re in New York this week, don’t miss Lidia’s session!

Something for Everyone at New York Blockchain Week

Day and night, there’s plenty more going on in New York this week beyond the Ethereal Summit and Consensus. Early birds can enjoy breakfast sessions on Thursday morning at the NY Blockchain Center, while night owls will be spoilt for choice over which of the evening events to attend.

Techies have their own special event which runs alongside Consensus, called Construct. As well as presenting a snapshot of technical developments in the blockchain ecosystem, the event also features a hackathon.

If you’re interested in which projects are up-and-coming in the blockchain world, there’s a pitching contest on Tuesday where startup founders will be pitching their ideas to a panel of VC judges.

In summary, it’s set to be a stellar week in New York! We wish Lidia all the best for her panel and look forward to hearing all the news from Blockchain Week in NYC.
